Anorex
Anorex is
promoted as a weight-control compound for the significantly overweight.
It is produced by Klein-Becker USA, a company with a lavish advertising
budget that has given this product a lot of visibility in magazines.
It contains the usual three ingredients found in most fat burners
ephedrine, caffeine and aspirin but with some unique
twists. Additional ingredients L-tyrosine, kelp and cayenne.
The primary ingredients in Anorex are Ephedrine, Caffeine and
Aspirin (ECA). Like other ECA-based products, Anorex works by
inducing thermogenesis (the production of heat), which speeds
up your metabolism and burns calories. Anorex also has an appetite-suppressing
effect, so you feel less hungry and therefore eat less. (For a
more detailed discussion of how Anorex works, see Does
Anorex Work).
The most powerful component in ECA-based supplements is ephedrine.
It's long been regarded as a fairly potent thermogenic compound,
but it was found to be even more effective when combined with
caffeine and aspirin. It's true that caffeine is also a fairly
good thermogenic compound, but it hardly measures up to ephedrine.
When caffeine and ephedrine are combined in fairly specific ratios,
the results are synergistic. In other words, the effects of each
are greater than the sum of their individual effects. The studies
that produced the most dramatic synergies used a caffeine/ephedrine
ratio of 10 to 1. When aspirin is thrown into the equation, these
results are further enhanced.
While Anorex does contain two ingredients in a 10 to 1 ratio,
they are not caffeine and ephedrine. Instead, it has 10 parts
of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) to one part caffeine. The exact
ratio of caffeine to ephedrine is impossible to determine because
the amount of green tea extract is not specified, but could be
as little as 2 to 1. The effectiveness of this ratio has not been
tested in published clinical studies.
Although Anorex has less caffeine than usual, it does have a fairly
common 20 mg of ephedrine alkaloids per serving, and it is the
ephedrine that can cause the greatest side effects. As a result,
even though Anorex is safe for most people, if you have a history
of heart or thyroid disease or drug abuse, an enlarged prostate
or high blood pressure, you should definitely check with your
doctor before you take this product.
