Bontril and Instructions
Why
is Bontril prescribed?
Bontril is used, in conjunction with
a weight loss diet and regular exercise, to help you lose weight.
Bontril works by suppressing your appetite. In other words, it
makes you feel less hungry, so you eat less.
How
should Bontril be used?
Bontril come in sustained release capsules in dosages of 105 mg
of phendimetrazine tartrate per capsule.
Bontril is
best taken on an empty stomach one hour before meals. Sustained-release
(Bontril-Sr) must be swallowed whole. Crushing or chewing them
will destroy the long action and may cause increased side effects.
Because Bontril
may cause sleeplessness, avoid taking a dose late in the day.
Take Bontril as prescribed. Do not take it more often or longer
than directed. It is usually taken for 8 to 12 weeks. Use in combination
with other appetite suppressant medicine is generally not recommended.
Consult your doctor before such use.
What
special precautions should I follow before taking Bontril?
Bontril may decrease the effectiveness of any blood pressure medications
you are taking. If you are taking MAO inhibitors, Bontril can
raise blood pressure and your risk of stroke. If you suddenly
stop taking Bontril, you may experience withdrawal symptoms such
as extreme fatigue, depression, and trouble sleeping.
Tell your
doctor if you have or have ever had heart disease, high blood
pressure, arteriosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries), hyperthyroidism
(overactive thyroid gland), diabetes, glaucoma, or a history of
drug abuse.
If you are
pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding, make
sure to tell your doctor. If you become pregnant while taking
Bontril, call your doctor.
Are
there any drug interactions I should be aware of?
Consult your doctor before taking Bontril if you are taking any
of the following drugs, as negative interactions may occur: MAO
inhibitors; phenothiazine tranquilizers; antihypertensive medications;
insulin or oral diabetic medications; over-the-counter cough,
cold, and asthma drugs. Avoid caffeine products while taking Bontril.
What
special dietary instructions should I follow?
Follow the diet and exercise program your doctor has given you.
Bontril works best in combination with a weight loss diet and
regular exercise program.
What
should I do if I forget a dose?
If you miss a dose, do not double the next dose. Instead, skip
the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
