Meridia
Meridia (sibutramine
hydrochloride monohydrate) is a diet pill used to treat obesity.
Meridia is
prescribed to people who have a body
mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. In some circumstances, doctors
may prescribe Meridia for people with BMIs of 27 to 30 when they
have other conditions (such as diabetes or sleep apnea) that are
made worse by being overweight. Meridia is intended to be used
along with a weight loss diet and a regular exercise program.
Sibutramine
(Meridia) works by suppressing your appetite. In other words,
it makes you feel less hungry. It accomplishes this by acting
on two chemicals in the brain (neurotransmitters), serotonin and
norepinephrine, that affect mood and appetite.
Meridia helps
reduce your appetite and make you feel full sooner, so you eat
less. Together with a reduced-calorie diet, regular exercise,
and other behavior changes, Meridia helps most people lose weight
and avoid regaining weight for up to 1 year.
Studies show
that people who follow a low-calorie diet and take Meridia for
6 to 12 months lose about 11 lbs, while people who follow the
same low-calorie diet but do not take Meridia lose only about
2.2 lbs.
Approximately
50% to 60% of the people who take Meridia lose more than 5% to
10% of their body weight while taking the medication, compared
with about 20% to 30% of people who follow the low-calorie diet
only.
However, Meridia
doesn't work for everyone. Studies show that about 10% of people
do not lose weight while taking Meridia. If you have not lost
about 4 lb within the first month of treatment, Meridia may not
be an effective medication for you.
Once people
stop taking Meridia, they may regain some or all of the weight
they lost while taking the medication.
